Yu Zhibin, deputy director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products and secretary general of Plant Extract Branch, is the main penner and publisher of China's plant extract import and export trade industry report. In the 2015 Chinese Innovation and Development Forum of Natural Active Ingredients: Industry-University-Research Docking and Cooperation Conference, he has given a speech and instruction about the plant extract industry development and new opportunities.

Director Yu has first introduced China’s export situation of plant extracts in 2014. The traditional Chinese medicine international trade import & export amount in 2014 is US$ 4.63 billion with a year-on-year growth of 9.8%, including the export amount of US$ 3.59 billion with a year-on-year growth of 14.5% and the import amount of US$ 1.04 billion with a year-on-year fall of 3.8%. Plant extracts have been exported to 10 countries and regions, including the United States (27%), Japan (19%), India (11%), Indonesia (9%), Malaysia (7%), Germany (6%), South Korea (6%) and Hong Kong (5%).

In the conference, Director Yu said, “China’s top 10 extract exporting enterprises are respectively Shanghai Tsumura Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., Hebei Chenguang Biotech Group Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Jiahe Phytochem Co., Ltd., Beijing Green Jinke Biological Technology Stock Co., Ltd., Ningbo Green-Health Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Pusaike (Jiangxi) Biotechnology Co. , Ltd., Guilin Layn Natural Ingredients Corp., Zhejiang Huisong Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., Dexinhang (zhuhai) Essence & Spice Co., Ltd. and Yunnan Ruibao Natural Pigment Co., Ltd. The product types corresponding to them are different, which shows the diversity of China’s plant extract raw material supply and the diversity of enterprise cooperation modes.”

When referring to the development present situation of plant extract industry, Director Yu still sincerely points out that the price competition of China’s plant extract industry still exists at present; the industry reconstruction is serious, the upstream and downstream industries are squeezed, and the malicious price reduction and other problems of foreign traders occur. Enterprises face both challenges and opportunities. Director Yu informs all representatives of favorable news about the domestic plant extract industry, including openness of compatible granule manufacturers, release of new food safety law, health food recording and registration, and transformation and upgrading critical period.

In the aspect of how China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products will continues to promote China’s plant extract industry development in the future, Director Yu Zhibin said, “The Green Standards of Medicinal Plants and Preparations for Foreign Trade and Economy jointly formulated by China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products and United States Pharmacopeia at present include 5 standards of plant extracts for foreign trade and economy including hypericum perforatum, etc. We shall advocate and establish the China Alliance for Plant Extract Industry Development to form a supplier alliance really representing China's plant extract productivity on the basis of China Branch for Plant Extracts so as to establish the international image of China’s plant extracts.”

In addition, according to the Herbridge Media, the proposal that the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products advocates the China Alliance for Plant Extract Industry Development will probably be formally established and launched in the 2015 Chinese International Competitiveness Promotion Forum of Plant Extract Industry, and we hope that all readers pay close attention to the latest activities of the Herbridge Media and China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products.

Yu Zhibin, deputy director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products, has introduced China’s export situation of plant extracts in the first half of 2015. The export amount of stevia extracts (stevioside), bilberry extracts, eucalyptus oil, capsorubin and cassia oil for only half a year has exceeded US$ 50 million, and therefore it is not a big problem to exceed US$ 100 million for a whole year. After arranging the domestic and overseas events occurring in the plant extract industry recently, including the ginkgo biloba extract event prominently showing the industry chaotic phenomena, we find that ginkgo biloba extracts have basically dropped out of the top 10 in exports under the conditions of the continuous fermentation of international market and sharp drop in exports. But a major turning point brought about by this event is that domestic and overseas practitioners have started to attach importance to the quality of plant extracts. In addition, the record system for plant extracts will become a main trend, which can be used in both traditional Chinese medicine field and health product field. For the plant extract industry, it can be said that the record system is a milestone-style influence and will also be conducive to further standardizing the development of this industry and provoking industrial upgrading opportunities.
