Magnolia bark extract available include magnolol, honokiol and magnolol& honokiol with the effective ingredient content at 2 percent to 98 percent. The high-purity extract is preffered, for example, the ones for health products are primarily the extracts at 90 and 95 percent. The extract is more exported to Europe and America, less to the Asian-Pacific region such as South Korean and Japan.
Magnolia mainly grows in Hunan province. Surname Luo, general manager of Honsea Sunshine Biotech, told herbridge.com that the price for Magnolia bark rose around 5 percent, but the price war led to a 10 percent decrease of price for low-content extract, while the high-purity one saw no change in price. On the whole, the price for Magnolia extract remained stable through 2013.
Wide application
Magnolia extract is largely used in health products, followed by oral products and washing products. Accumulated evidence shows that high-content magnolol and honokiol possess strong pharmacological effects on many diseases, including antibacteria, antiinflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant.
High-content magnolol and honokiol see an increasing demand from manufactures of medicines, supplements and food at home and abroad. Most of health products claim to prevent depression, improve sleep quality, resist anxiety or relieve stress. Moreover, the extract has started to be used in feed and health products for animals.
As consumers are pursing for natural and safe products, Magnolia extract is gaining an increase in oral products and washing products. Thanks to excellent antibacterial effect, magnolia and honokiol are ideal additives in candy and gum for tooth decay prevention. Several products like Magnolia-toothpaste and Magnolia-mouthwash have launched at home and abroad. In addition, Magnolia extract is applied in cosmetics for the benefits of antiinflammatory and antioxidant.
Supercritical CO2 fluid extraction vs ethanol extraction
Magnolia extract is produced by Supercritical CO2 fluid extraction or ethanol extraction in China. The weakness for extract from ethanol extraction is: 1) Low content, generally lower than 60 percent; 2) alkaloid residual, alkaloid is very soluble in ethanol because of powerful chemical polarity. 3) dark colour, high temepreture makes active ingredients more likely to transform to Quinonoids.
Most of exported magnolia extract is produced by ethanol extraction. Alkaloid residual and transformed quinonoids make product toxity uncertain, so magnolia extract is banned in some countries such as Canada and Spain.
The advantages for supercritical CO2 fluid extraction are:
1) No alkaloid residual and production of quinonoids; 2) Product safety and stability are guaranteed; 3) High content, 99 percent at the highest, which meets the demand of high-purity extract 4) White.
It is convenient to be used in cosmetics and personal care products.
"We are working to offer effective and safe products, and to develop new product forms to help magnolia extract expand its application in functional products, personal care products and animal health products", said Luo.
The largest consumers are still Europe and America, and the market is expected to keep stable with a rise in 2014, added Luo.
