Olive leaf extract, whose main component is Oleuropein, is derived from Canarium album raeusch. The herb is introduced around the world, but the original herb wildly grows in the mountains of Sichuan, Guizhou and Hunan province.
Olive leaf extract, which is of greatest concern in foreign market, has been seeing an increase of demand in recent years, especially for high-level Oleuropein, Hydroxytyrosol and Oleanolicacid, said Manager Hu of Xi'an App-Chem Bio (Tech) Co., Ltd, a company who gains HALAL and Kosher certification.
Thanks to the long edible history of Olive fruit, oil and tea in the west, the extract is expanding application in food, health products and cosmetics. There are stricter requirements (especially safety) on olive serial products in Eurpo and America. So Xi'an App-Chem Bio (Tech) is working to gain organic certification. The company plans to produce high-quality olive products based on superior materials in Longnan, Gansu province. Manager Hu outlined olive leaf extract as followed.
Researchers found that olive-sourced Oleanolicacid is beneficial to tumor and diabetes treatment. The main specification is 30, 60, 80 and 98 percent.
As natural polyphenols, Hydroxytyrosol has several biological and pharmacological activities. Besides a little free Hydroxytyrosol, it exists in all parts of olive primarily as its ester, Oleuropein. Oleuropein can be hydrolyzed to produce free Hydroxytyrosol. 10, 20, 90 and 98 percent Hydroxytyrosol are available on the market.
Active components in Olive extract can be increased by low temperature cry desiccation technique or ultrasonic extraction, which will enhance the extract's antioxidant activity.
Manager Hu said, "Most manufacturers of Oleuropein bought olive leaf from Gansu province, where olive trees were planted on a large scale in 2013. The price for olive leaf remained stable through last year. Owing to road repairing, lots of trees were cut down in early 2014, leading to inadequate production of olive leaf. The price rose by 40 percent on larger demand. The market is not expected to run stable in the future."
Oleuropein is widely used in food, beverage, cosmetics and health products. It is not hard to produce olive extract, and olive leaf is sold at a low price. So there are many manufacturers in provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Shaanxi, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The extract's market run steady through 2013, but manufacturers received more orders and saw slightly tighter supply of olive leaf around the Spring Festival. Lots of manufacturers rushed to Gansu province to purchase olive leaf, resulting in a higher price for the leaf, according to herbridge.com.
Considering higher leaf prices and higher processing costs, the extract's price will rise in 2014, but the price is still determined by the supply and the demand, said Manager Hu.
