5-hydroxytryptophan, or 5-HTP, is manufactured naturally in the human body. It is the direct chemical precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin regulates a variety of functions, including body temperature and digestion. Drugs that increase synaptic serotonin levels, however, are usually used in order to treat depression and anxiety. While most pharmaceutical antidepressants work by preventing the body from destroying or reabsorbing serotonin, 5-HTP is believed to work by increasing the basic building block necessary for the body to manufacture it.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 5-HTP may be as effective as some antidepressant drugs in treating mild to moderate depression.5-HTP is available over the counter in the United States and via the Internet in Canada. Some thought 5-HTP is the best natural alternative to antidepressant drugs. Moreover, 5-HTP is expected to be added in functional beverages in the future.
Tighter supply
The 5-HTP demand increased strongly in 2013. Besides the large increase in Europe and America, there is a significant increase in Brazil, where the suicide rate is said to be the highest among people with depressive disorders. As the demand rises, the demand exceeded the supply in China by the end of 2013, when the price increased by 7 percent from H1 2013.
