As the largest supplier of stevia, China produces 80 percent of global stevia,but has to be waiting for innovations in food & beverage sector.

Overall, the cost remains to be the first-considering factor when selecting sweeteners in China's food and beverage sector. Some large companies, such as Coca cola, Huiyuan Group, Wahaha and Red Bull, have no intensified tendency to use natural sweetener in China. 

But on international market, the top 500 enterprises in the world such as Coca Cola are using steiva in their products.

Hard for Steiva Producers

Some manufacturers stopped production or closed down last year, according to Herbridge Media. "There are more producers and overcapacity in the past two years, " PURCICLE told herbridge media, " We are in dilemma situation, which is one of the major problems in China's stevia sector."

1 The stevia-sourced sweetener has the similar production procedure with sugarcane-sourced sugar, but the sweetener is still classified as chemical extracts, and the export rebate rate declines to 9 percent from 13 percent.

2 Only 7 foods are allowed to use stevia as sweetener, But 18 more foods are allowed to add Saccharin Sodium, Acesulfame potassium and Sodium cyclamate in China. But in CAC regulation, stevia sweetener is approved in 53 foods.

Market Scale

According to a market report by BCC Research, stevia accounts for 14 percent of the global sweetener market, secondary to Aspartame and sucralose. There are more fat people, and the diabetes population is expanding and younger now. The nature sweeteners with low calories have attracted lots of consumers, which further promotes its application in end products.

The stevia sweetener may replace 25 percent of the global sugar consumption by 2050, said PURCICLE in H2 2013.

Planting area sharply declines

The planting area of stevia declined sharply to less than 100 000 mu in 2013, and the stevia price rose around 20 percent, according to herbridge.com. Farmers may don't have the initiative to grow stevia in 2014.

Market trend

Stevia sweetener is still for foreign market. China consumes a little stevia, which is dominated by small and medium enterprises in food and beverage sector.

Stevia leaf saw a higher price, but the sweetener price has no change. With stable market, the stevia sweetener is primarily exported to Europe, America and Southeast Asia. China

continues to export primary raw materials, and the sale is similar with previous years.
