With four manufacturers of natural astaxanthin and one manufactures of synthetic one, China contributes to 40 percent of the global production. Natural and synthetic ones are both exported to some extent. The increasing application in health product, cosmetic and aquatic feed attracts many manufacturers and traders at home and abroad to the astaxanthin sector. Some traders sell natural astaxanthin adulterated with synthetic one, which disrupts the market. Most astaxanthin is exported by foreign-funded traders. Herbrige.com advises importers to select reliable manufacturers or traders.
Higher price
With demand exceeding supply, the astaxanthin market has been fluctuating since June, according to Yunnan Alphy Biotech, the only producer to culture Haematococcus pluvialis with runway style and photo-bioreactor in the world. Fewer suppliers, caused by high requirements on technology, along with long productive cycle lead to global shortage of astaxanthin, and the price rises accordingly.
Application
Astaxanthin is primarily for aquatic feed and health product. The main specification is 0.5-1.5% astaxanthin in aquatic feed, 5% oil astaxanthin in health product, 2-3% astaxanthin in cosmetics. All the prices fluctuate about 25 percent in 2013.
