FSANZ approved microalgae source DHA use in infant formulas

 In May 22nd, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued the Food Standards Act revised version, approved that DHA algae oil from Schizochytrium sp. could be used in infant formulas.
 
FSANZ issued the revised draft and report on November 1, 2016 and asked for comments. After that, four opinions were received. The revised draft was approved by Australia and New Zealand on March 9, 2017. On March 22, 2017, the ministerial meeting of New Zealand and Australia received the decision of the FSANZ.
 
The final approval that algae oil from Schizochytrium sp with a large content of DHA are permitted used in infant formulas was made. At the same time, the specifications on the algae oil was developed, including the content of DHA, EPA and Trans-fatty acids and other parameters.
 
Until now, FSANZ has approved several kinds of microalgae oil as new sources of food. Since 1990, the oil with a large content of DHA has been approved for infant formulas. The FSANZ held that Schizochytrium sp. oil was as safe as other oils.
