Due to good harvest of Silybum Marianum seeds in 2011, which led to a short-term sufficient supply of raw materials, the price of Silymarin fell to the bottom in China before the Spring Festival. Producers sold their products at the price almost close to the cost. Nearly at the end of Q1 2012, Chinese producers of Silymarin began to quote slightly higher price of Silymarin based on the purchase cost of Silybum Marianum seeds.
As described by producers in Panjin area in China, Silybum Marianum growers sold their Silybum Marianum seeds almost at a price almost lower than the breakeven point. After the Spring Festival, as producers initiated staged purchase, growers raised the price of Silybum Marianum seeds. Producers expressed that, their advantages in raw materials allowed them begin to raise price slightly, at a rate not greater than 1%. Yet they had no great margin of profit. Resulted from the price soaring due to short supply of Silymarin in previous years, some small processing plants have also become producers since the end of last year. Therefore, it is more obvious that both good- and bad-quality products appear in the market, and prices fail to rise effectively. Some long-term producers maintain their customers with a bulkcheap strategy for their leading products.
As the price of raw materials is unstable and may likely rise in the future, producers do not accept long-term orders basically in order to avoid risks.
