Workshop 2: Business Opportunities in the Global Makret for Natural Cosmetics

According to the report given by Amarjit Sahota, president of Organic Monitor, the global market size for natural and organic cosmetics reached US $8.4 billion in 2010. The leading regions were North America and Europe, which combined contributed to 93 percent of global revenue. In North America, the sales of natural & organic cosmetics approached to US $5.1 billion and accounted for 8 percent of the total cosmetic market revenues in 2010. In Europe, the leading markets were Germany and France. The ratio of natural & organic cosmetic products to total revenue was about 6 percent in Germany, compared to 3 percent in France. In Asia-Pacific regions, the sale of natural and organic cosmetics was only US $400-450 m. Overall, very few true natural & organic brands are available in China.

Although the natural and organic cosmetic industry lagged in China, many cosmetic manufacturers consider China as the most attracted market. Some of the reasons include:

*China has large consumer groups with more disposable income;
*China lacks established local brands related to natural organic cosmetic;
*Growing consumers concern products’ safety and health and they aware terms such as natural and organic;
*Most consumers are confident in foreign brands rather than local brands.

China is so fascinated that many foreign brands plan to sell natural and organic cosmetic products here.

There are many challenges for foreign companies to market natural & organic cosmetics in China. In addition to language and cultural difference, legislation and standards are the most constrained factors. So far, there is no formal definition of natural cosmetics, no legal protection of natural and organic terms and no formal standards for natural and organic cosmetics in Asia. Therefore, it needs time for natural & organic cosmetics market to grow in China. It needs efforts of the government and companies to push development of natural & organic cosmetics industry in China.

The new natural & organic cosmetics standard COSMOS is formed of Ecocert Greenlife, Cosmebio, ICEA, BDIH and UK Soil Association in Europe. The new standard was finalized in June 2009 and began certification in 2011. Herbridge Media comments that the harmonization of existing standards in Europe will benefit establishment of related cosmetic standards and development of natural & organic cosmetics industry in China.
