The sustainability along the entire supply chain makes a positive contribution to economy, environment and society. Key contributors for sustainable development in cosmetic industry include: ethical points in cosmetics is increasingly recognized; consumers look for more economic cosmetics; manufacturers suffer from heavier pressure from supply chain; media reports and environmental protection organizations advocate sustainable development in cosmetic industry.
The practical solutions for sustainable cosmetics include: ethical souring of ingredients; organic and sustainable production methods; green chemistry or formulations; sustainable packing; reducing carbon footprint and eco-design manufacturing.
Natural & organic cosmetics are becoming mainstream. Johnson and Johnson, LOREAL and NIVEA all launched natural & organic cosmetics and toiletries in major markets. Consistent with sustainability, manufacturers select herbal actives in formulations. More and more herbal ingredients are added in natural cosmetic products after intensive research.
AAK Sweden AB specialized in developing vegetable oils for uses in beauty and personal care formulations, including coconut oil, palm oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil and others. The global production of major vegetable oils is over 160 M MT in 2009, said Jari Alander, Business Development Director of AAK.

Gordon Chalmers, co-founder and chief operations officer of Jasmin Skincare, hopes to bring organic to the Chinese consumers and believed that organic cosmetics will lead China’s cosmetic market. But how can Chinese consumers really know if their skincare products are really organic? Gordon suggested build certified organic farm, operate certified organic processing and manufacturing and offer certified organic products.

Dr. Archana, research scientist of Himalaya Drug Company, introduced Ayurveda in cosmetic applications and current research on Ayurvedic ingredients. There are nearly 250 single plant monographs related to Ayurvedic ingredients. GLP, GCP and GMP are used in the planting of Avurvedic plants. But there are challenges in Ayurvedic cosmetic industry such as botanical authenticity, bulk availability, cost issues, formulation and regulatory problems.
