Global Dietary Supplement Market-at-a-glance

The global herbal supplements and remedies market is projected to hit US$93.15 billion by 2015. Europe is projected to be the largest regional market with Asia-Pacific projecting the highest growth rate with a CAGR of 10.7 %.

In response to Japan’s radiation threat, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers to be wary of supplements and other products sold online and in retail stores that claim to treat or prevent the effects of radiation but are not FDA-approved for that purpose. For consumers who are considering taking dietary supplements during the reported shortage of potassium iodide, the FDA-approved drug that can help prevent radiation-induced thyroid cancer in the event of a true radiation emergency shall pay extra attention. Philip J. Gregory, Pharm.D, editor of the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database comments that most supplements contain very little or no reliable scientific evidence supporting their use. It is advised that consumers should think twice before loading up on supplements with unknown benefits and unclear safety.

In China, to ensure the quality and safety of health foods the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has imposed new quality control regulations towards dietary supplement manufacturers. The measures include greater numbers of inspections and tighter guidelines on raw materials record keeping so as to “further enhance the supervision on raw materials for health foods and ensure the quality and safety of health foods,” the SFDA said on its website.
