Aesculus chinensis experienced a very poor harvest in China in 2010,resulting in the seed price growth of above 100%.Moreover,the inflation through China also drived horse chestnut extract prices to increase month by month.
The seeds of Aesculus chinensis are typically picked in August. The major production areas of Aesculus chinensis such as Hanzhong and Shennongjian districts sufferred heavy rains in March and April when the crop flowered. Therefore, the output decreased significantly this year.It is said that the prices for aesculus chinensis seeds began to rise step by step shortly after the new crop's arrival. The prices had gone up rapidly until November with the strong competition from pharmaceuticals corporations. The prices are currently mantained at 42-45RMB/kg,compared to 20RMB/kg in previous years.
"Herbal extracts manufacturers will have to give up purchasing seeds as they cann't afford such high prices in China. The prices for horse chestnut extracts are increasing, but the rise potential is small and the time is delayed compared to the seeds."commented Wang Enfeng,General Manager of Baoji Runyu Bio-technology Co.,Ltd,"It also needs time for international customers to accept the price growth of horse chestnut extracts." Runyu Bio-technology has rich experience in the development and production of horse chestnut line. The company planed to adjust product mix to relieve the increasing serious supply situations.Wang stated,"We will try our best to guarantee the supply of these serial products."
The inflation does bring great pressures to most herbal extracts manufacturers, including wide-range price growth of medicinal materials, increased transport and labor cost and risen energy prices.Which is likely to continue in 2011.
According to herbridge.com,20% aescin(UV) prices rise to 240RMB/kg now from 160RMB/kg in previous years. The market is forcast to see new increase after the Spring Festival.
