Griffonia simplicifolia wildly grows in Ghana,the Ivory Coast and Togo of Africa.Of which,Ghana produces over 80 percents of the total crop production.2010-2011 is the off year for griffonia seed.Moreover,the crop suffered from heavy rain before the harvest and fruits dropped seriously.The output is said to be one third of last year's.In fact,the optimal harvest time is February.As a wild plant,griffonia seed is usually picked competitively among farmers.So the harvesting is almost finished in January.

The FOB prices for griffonia seed is $17/kg,far higher than $5/kg in previous years.While 5-HTP prices are bascially maintained around 2300RMB/kg,far lower than last year.Compared to last year,domestic manufacturers become much cool and calm this year.Some manufacturers said,"If the price is higher than $15/kg,we will not purchase griffonia seed and prefer to give up production."

Domestic manufacturers are waiting and don't begin to purchase griffonia seed on a large scale now.Typically,the shipment departs from Ghana in January and arrives in China in March.There is almost no griffonia seed for 5-HTP supply during January and March,so 5-HTP prices may slightly rise.Sometimes,manufacturers may transport a batch of griffonia seed by air in order to address the issues.Given today's 5-HTP market,almost no manufacturers will transport griffonia seed by air this year.

5-HTP was sold at an astronomical price in H2 2009.5-HTP purchasers also learned the good harvest in early 2010,and hammered down suppliers on prices.5-HTP prices declined gradually in H1 2010 and dropped below 3000RMB/kg in June,but the sales had been weak.That predicts the export volume of 5-HTP was not large in H1 2010.According to herbridge.com,most 5-HTP was exported at the price of 2100-2200RMB/kg with no profit for manufacturers in H2 2010.Major manufacturers don't have plenty of 5-HTP in stock now.They gave no answer to the future market of 5-HTP.

The U.S.consumes over 20 tons of 5-HTP every year,which is the largest 5-HTP importer and consuming country in the world.The country may consume more 5-HTP in the future.According to herbridge.com,China may produce about 35 tons of 5-HTP in 2010.

According to herbridge.com,2010 5-HTP market basically rely on the demand and the supply.In the near future,manufacturers may not raise the prices significantly for the sake of stablizing the present customer group.
