Silymarin Prices Remain High Levels in China

Herbridge,21 Dec.2010_The increased demand from global market associated with the poor harvest this year resulted in the tight supply for Milk thistle extract.Large manufacturers have no ability to receive new orders now.

Milk thistle saw the largest growing areas in 2003 with the output of 100 thousand tons.The supply extremely exceeded the demand,and therefore the growing areas declined significantly in 2003.The planting areas increased year by year after 2004,but the overall areas is no more than that in 2003.Compared to previous years,the quality and quantity of milk thistle both decline on account of unfavorable climates this year.Like other agricultural products,the prices for milk thistle increase this year.

By now,milk thistle prices have risen up to 20RMB/kg in Northeast China.Farmers are expected to sell milk thistle at the price of over 30RMB/kg in Northeast China.Manufacturers have to purchase milk thistle from other smaller growing regions including Inner Mongolia and Panjin,Liaoning province.According to herbridge.com,some manufacturers have built relationships with growers on the 2011 supply of milk thistle.Meanwhile,farmers are organized to cultivate milk thistle in 2010 in Xinjiang province.

In addition to the increase of milk thistle prices,the yield of silymarin is low compared to previous years.Accordingly,the production cost of silymarin increase this year,and the prices may increase in the near future.UV80 prices are likely to rise back to 540-560RMB/kg before the coming Spring Festival.
