Herbridge,2 April 2010-A number of medicinal herbals face the danger of extinction on account of over-exploitation and  predatory exploitation.TCM companies are striving to search for solutions to the issues.

According to herbridge.com,there are 168 species of rare and endangered medicinal  plants, including Chinese Caterpillar Fungus,Saussurea.A few valuble medicinal plant have become  extinct such as wild ginseng. There are over 20000 kinds of plants including more than 8000  kinds of medicinal plants in China. There are 112 species needed to be protected among 500 kinds  of frequently-used Chinese crude drugs. The output of some Chinese crude drugs decreases year by  year such as liquorice, herba ephedrae, radices stellariae dichotomae, herba  cistanches, aweto,Rhodiola.Which to some extent affects the production of TCM enterprises.

About 80 percent of medicinal herbals used in Japan and South Korea, whose market share is up  90% in medicinal herbal industry, comes from China.A number of Chinese crude drugs are exported  with low price and low value.Which is a hazard to the sustainable development of TCM  manufacturers.

Many manufacturers in China are taking active steps to solve the promblems.GAP production bases  have been widely built in China in recent years.Industry insider said the standards for  traditional Chinese medicine are far from perfection. It is also hard for the great  manufacturers to afford the GAP cost, let alone small- and medium-sized enterprises. There are  over 2000 TCM manufacturers and most of them are small and medium sized enterprises. It is  therefore unwise to improve the situation through self-regulation.
