Luo Han Guo (Monk Fruit) primarily grows in Guilin country, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. The herb is also cultivated on a small scale in Yongzhou county of Hunan province, and Zhangzhou county of Fujian province. Guilin, known as "Home of Luo Han Guo" for 800 years, accounts for over 98 percent of the global growing area. So domestic suppliers have large advantages.

The market for Luo Han Guo remained stable through 2013. The harvest began in October, and the production decreased on unfavorable climates, which is to some extent offseted by an increase of Mogroside V level in the fruit. Enterprises of Guo extract are located in a particular place. Large manufacturers include Layn, Guilin GFS Bio-Tech Ltd, Hunan Hill Pharmaceutical Ltd and Hunan Huacheng Pharmaceutical Ltd.

After a detailed safety assessment performed on monk fruit by Health Canada, Canada approved monk fruit extract at a maximum level of 0.8%—calculated as chemical compound mogroside V—in tabletop sweeteners in March 2013. The approval expands the extract's market again.

It launched over 200 kinds of products with mogroside in food, beverage, health products and chemicals in the past 20 years, according to herbridge.com. Mogroside is expanding its application, and expected to be used in all the food sectors.

The extract sales reached $50 million in 2013, a 20 percent increase over 2012, said a person from Hunan Huacheng Pharmaceutical Ltd. Luo Han Guo extract is mostly added in other sweeteners for use. The export value is predicted to reach $100 million.

Luo Han Guo extract is primarily exported to Europe and America in 2013. The demand may increase, but the price may not change in the future.
