Huperzine serrate primarily grows in northwest and north China. Huperzine A, the efficient ingredient, is mainly for cognitive disorders such as dementia.

Huperzine A has been attracting more researchers of brain health for years. The wild herb in China is insufficient to meet domestic demand, so some wild huperzine serrate is imported from Vietnam, Laos etc.

The combination of growing demand and decreasing herb supply results in an excessive and disorderly harvesting, and then lower Huperzine A content in herb. The extract's sustainable development will see large challenges if the demand expands.   

The price for Huperzine serrate retreated to 240 yuan per kilogram in May last year. It's hard to predict the future market, on the basis of unclear terminal demand, according to herbridge.com.
As an endangered species, Huperzine serrate is concerned by more players. Some institutes are learning how to cultivate the wild herb. The plant is reproduced by spores, with low survival ratio and long growing year, which adds cultivation's difficulty.

Baoji RunYu Biotechnology told herbridge.com that China produces 150-200 tons Huperzine serrate this year, and the production declines year by year. North America is the largest demander of the extract, especially the United States with estimated annual demand of 800 kilograms.

The export dropped by 20 to 30 percent from 2012. The higher prices for raw materials eased demand from North America, and terminal clients are waiting and watching. After one-year consumption, the market is predicated to rise steadily, but not largely.

Institutions at home and abroad succeeded in synthesizing huperzine A, but the high cost hindered its industrial production.
