Blueberry is one of more developed products with more suppliers and wider applications in China. Dr. Tang Xuedong, Institutes of Berry Studies, Jilin Agriculture University, discussed the development and utilization of blueberry at home and abroad.
Opportunities
China has formed five blueberry-bearing districts, namely Changbai Mountain Area, Da and Xiao Hinggang Mountains Area, Liaodong peninsula Area, Jiaodong peninsula Area and the south of the Yangtze valley. "The domestic blueberry industry has been in the booming ten-year period since 2008," said Dr. Tang Xuedong, " It attracts domestic and oversea finance capital and the investment is estimated over one billion yuan by 2012. The multinational corporations such as Driscoll, Hortifruit and VBM have involved in or are preparing to play in China's blueberry industry."
The research began in 1983 to 1999. The industrialized production began in 1999 to 2003. The rapid growth began in 2004 to 2007. The large-scale cultivation by corporations prompts the industry into rapid development since 2008. With government support, the growing area has risen by 100 thousand mu yearly since 2010. The growing area is forecast to be one million mu in five years, two million in ten years. On the growing area by 2012, the top one is Shandong province (3866 ha), followed by Guizhou province (3200 ha), and then by Liaoning and Jilin province. On output in 2012, the top one is Liaoning province (2300 tons), followed by Shandong (2100 tons) and Guizhou (1500 tons). The total production is 8721 tons in 2012.
There are 100 more firms involving in the cultivation, process and sale of blueberry in China. The large-scale cultivation by corporations accounts for 60 percent of the country's total planting area. Wild blueberry is primarily processed by 20 more firms in Daxing Hinggang Mountains. Cultivated blueberry is mainly processed by 30 more corporations in Jilin and Liaoning provinces. It's featured by fruit sale in Shandong province and the south of the Yangtze River valley.
Challenges
We lack advanced technique and management experience in cultivation. The manual cost is much higher than the mechanical cost, which will weaken our competitive power on the global market.
