Dr. Guo Hao, Institute of Desertification Studies, CAF, outlined the performance of wild berry at home and abroad, and then gave his advice on the future development.

Outlines

The global berry cultivation transferred from west to east (about 50 years), from north to south (about 20 years), representing a trend to shift from developed countries to less developed districts as a labor-intensive industry. Large producers include Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Peru in South America; America, Canada and Mexico in North America; Serbia, Poland and Hungary in Eastern Europe. Berry development also occurs in Asia, Western Europe and Oceania.

Problems

With extensive management, the aggressive operation leads to downward tendency for wild berry production in China. If we make more efforts in introduction program, we can use domestic resource more effectively and improve seeds breeding and selection of good strains. The lack of research and development results in serious waste of resource. The domestic introductions are mostly blindness, lack for an integral cultivation plan across the country.

Advice

The authority should make a development plan for wild resource, increase research funding, improve administration and management by means of varied contracts. Domestic manufacturers should improve their R&D ability or expand cooperation with institutes of scientific research, making themselves more competitive with patent products. Farmers should have sense of sustainability and give up predatory harvesting. The cultivation should be guided by institutes of scientific research, avoiding the loss of resources caused by blind introduction.
